You may have heard about many of the amazing benefits of yoga, from the physical, to the psychological, and even to the metaphysical. While yoga is renowned for helping us become more compassionate, loving, even enlightened humans, many people decide to try yoga for its more tangible benefits. The most immediate benefit that people often experience in their very first class is simply an enhanced sense of peace and calm. Another benefit that people experience right away, regardless of their perceived level of fitness or physical ability, is improved posture. Walking taller and ditching the slouch will make you feel better instantly. After a surprisingly short few weeks of practice, you will begin to notice that you are more flexible and stronger. Improved balance comes with additional focused practice and is well worth the effort.
Many people wonder if yoga can help you lose weight. Certainly there are plenty of cadiovascularly intense activities, such as running or dancing, that can blast more calories, but yoga stands out for its tendency to improve our relationship with our bodies, and, therefore, our relationship with the food we put in our bodies. Also, any practice that reduces stress, one of the hallmark benefits of yoga, reduces fat-enhancing cortisol. Of course, in a vigorous yoga practice like Vinyasa Flow, you can blast a lot of calories, too.
